Actor Sir Ben Kingsley said pupils must see Shakespeare performed to understand his works rather than just reading the texts.
The actor said youngsters are being put off Britain’s greatest literary figure by the way his plays are taught with schoolchildren “bashing their way through the texts”.
The Oscar and Bafta-winner, who spent 15 years at the Royal Shakespeare Company, said good actors could bring the stories alive and spark an early interest in and understanding of the Bard.
