The distinctive Shakespeare theater cupola has been a painful reminder that its long-celebrated stage has been dark for the past three decades.

For others, the theater’s golden era has come and gone, and the day has arrived to consider the unthinkable: tearing down the teak-paneled building to make way for something else.
