Utah’s Pioneer Theatre Company to stage comedy for Shakespeare-haters

The subject of Pioneer Theatre Company’s new comedy, “I Hate Hamlet,” should appeal to the theater haters who think of “Hamlet” as “algebra onstage” as well as the lovers who consider the Bard’s story of the young haunted Danish prince “the most beautiful play ever written.”

Paul Rudnick’s comedy tells the story of famous young TV actor Andrew Rally (Ben Rosenbaum), whose dreamy girlfriend, Dierdre (Alyssa Gagarin), and his forcefully dramatic agent, Lillian (Sybil Lines), want him to prove himself by playing Hamlet at New York’s Shakespeare in the Park. The conflict, of course, is that Rally hates and fears the role.
