All I knew about Staunton (pronounced STAN-ton), Va., before visiting recently was that Woodrow Wilson was born there. Since we were already well-versed in Wilson’s life, we skipped the Wilson Museum for Staunton’s other pleasures.

But none of that was the main reason for our visit. What drew us there was that Staunton has the only existing re-creation of Shakespeare’s London Blackfriars Playhouse, the first indoor theater in the English-speaking world. When I read about the re-created Blackfriars doing “Othello’’ — one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, (I admit I can rarely fathom the Richards and Henrys) — Pat, a writer and former teacher of English, and I, a former lit major, jumped at the chance.
