All I knew about Staunton (pronounced STAN-ton), Va., before visiting recently was that Woodrow Wilson was born there. Since we were already well-versed in Wilson’s life, we skipped the Wilson Museum for Staunton’s other pleasures.

What drew us there was that Staunton has the only existing re-creation of Shakespeare’s London Blackfriars Playhouse, the first indoor theater in the English-speaking world.
