It can’t have escaped your attention that last week was the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. The Stage themed last week’s paper on it and there was masses of coverage elsewhere. And I expect you knew anyway.
On the presumed birthday itself – 23 April, God for England, Harry and St George – I set out in search of some learning. And I went not to Stratford-upon-Avon or to the Globe in Southwark but to Shoreditch – not a place widely associated with England’s national playwright in the public imagination. That is about to be put right because one Will Shakespeare, did in fact do a lot of work north of the river in Shoreditch with Burbage and others.
