“A sword sliced the air.”
Though the line sounds like it could easily be from a work by William Shakespeare, it actually comes from the rap song “She” by Tyler, The Creator.
To Ron Williams, Shakespeare Walla Walla executive director, identifying lines as the work of either Shakespeare or of rappers is just one method the nonprofit organization uses to challenge students to see the 17th century playwright in a new light through the “Living with Shakespeare” program.
The program is designed to draw students in grades 7 through 9 to Shakespeare through interactive activities centered on theater and performance. This year the program is expanding its educational outreach well beyond Walla Walla.
