ilmmakers from India have a new challenge – interpret Shakespeare and his masterpieces into modern-day films. Britain has floated major plans to celebrate Shakespeare’s 400th death anniversary next year.
Shakespeare India forms part of Shakespeare 400 on Screen, a major film and television programme led by Film London to mark 400 years since the writer’s death.
The celebrations taking place in 2016 include an international touring programme ‘Shakespeare Around the World’ screening at major film festivals.
Shakespeare India will allow ambitious Asian film talents from India and the UK to work on feature projects inspired by the playwright.
Film London has floated a boot camp to enable 15 filmmakers, writers, directors and producers to form five feature teams to work on five contemporary Shakespeare feature film projects.
One of these projects will be selected and will receive production funding to produce the feature.
This film will be released in 2016 and will form a part of the British Council’s worldwide programme of screenings.
