April 23 2014 marked William Shakespeare’s 450th birthday.  Considered the greatest playwright ever, Shakespeare has been variously copied, parodied, plagiarised, adapted, honoured, revered, abused and accused – but never ignored. Even 450 years after his birth, Shakespeare’s plays remain contemporary in their stories, emotions and characters. His genius in creating universal characters and stories is unparalleled with his plays being made into films even in Bollywood.

Bollywood’s fascination for universal appeal of Shakespeare sometimes takes the form of cross-dressing main leads (a la Twelfth Night – found in movies like Subhash Ghai’s Apna Sapna Money Money and Govinda starrer Haseena Maan Jayegi) leading to hilarious triangular love stories. At other times his beautiful words and sentiments find place in song lyrics — the most notable is the line Aankh Khuli To Dil Chaha Phir Neend Mujhe Aajaye from the song Bholisi Surat (Dil Toh Pagal Hai – 1997) which is the same sentiment expressed by Caliban (The Tempest) in the line “I cried to dream again”.
