Donna Northcott: A passion for Shakespeare

This weekend, a factoid in the American arts world gets an update.

Six theater companies in the United States have presented all the plays that William Shakespeare wrote. But with the production that just opened — “Blood Reigns: The War of the Roses Trilogy,” an original adaptation that combines “Henry VI, Part 1,” “Henry VI, Part 2” and “Henry VI, Part 3” into a single drama — St. Louis Shakespeare becomes No. 7.

Donna Northcott says that the whole canon was the last thing on her mind when, fresh out of graduate school at Northwestern University, she founded St. Louis Shakespeare with a production of “Twelfth Night.” The show at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy was so bare-bones “that ‘Exit stage right’ meant ‘Go stand on the fire escape,’” she recalls with a laugh.
