‘Redneck Shakespeare’ brings humor, accessibility to Shrew

What happens when Shakespeare’s war of the sexes comedy meets up with pirates? You get the Ross Ragland Theater’s Redneck Shakespeare production of “Taming of the Shrew.”

Performances of “Redneck Shakespeare” will be at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, April 23 to 25, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 26, in the Ross Ragland Theater, according to a news release.

Contrary to a perception that William Shakespeare’s plays are full of morals and are only for high brows, they are some that are “actually very funny,” said the theater’s executive director Mark McCrary.

“Add in a bit of modern dialogue and a few Pirates of the Caribbean-type references and audiences will likely be very surprised just how funny a story like ‘Taming of the Shrew’ really is,” he added.
