Review: I Hate Hamlet: University Theater, Denver Post

In “I Hate Hamlet,” successful actor Andrew Rally arrives in New York from Los Angeles after the end of his TV series, “L.A. Medical Center.”

His real estate agent, Felicia, as only a New York agent will, has secured him a fab abode nothing like what he asked for. The dark- paneled apartment with the fusty furniture and prominent stained- glass window was once occupied by John Barrymore. Decades later, the actor is still credited with one of the greatest stage portrayals of Hamlet. He performed it in 1922.

While Andrew is pleased to spend time with New York-based girlfriend Deirdre (Jamie Ann Romero), her steadfast, sunny virginity is starting to rattle him.

As kismet would have it, his hard-smoking, Teutonic agent Lillian (Anne Sandoe) has lined him up a plum gig: Shakespeare in the Park, playing Hamlet, no less. […continued]
