Shakespeare’s Globe is facing the threat of industrial action over a pay dispute at the venue.

Union BECTU is demanding a rise in the hourly rate that tour guides working at the venue receive, claiming that collectively the employees help make the Globe thousands of pounds. According to the Globe, tours generate a turnover of £3 million a year, and a net profit of £200,000 annually.

Tour guides only began to be represented by BECTU in November last year, with the union making its first pay claim in December, calling for a rise from the current £11.24 an hour to £13.50 an hour and further increases over the next three years.

BECTU claims that the venue has refused to negotiate, and is now conducting a consultative ballot with its members to see if industrial action should be pursued. If the majority of tour guides vote yes, they will be balloted about a strike at the theatre.
