‘The Art of Shakespeare’ puts the Bard in the picture

The works of Shakespeare – poet, playwright and, arguably, philosopher – have long inspired artists of all disciplines, and across centuries; from the paintings of William Blake and Sir John Everett Millais to songwriter Nick Lowe’s 1970s hit Cruel to be Kind and even Agatha Christie’sThe Mousetrap, named after a reference from Hamlet.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Bell Shakespeare Company, a group of Australia’s best visual artists were invited to respond to any of the Bard’s works for an exhibition called The Art of Shakespeare.

Bell’s general manager, Gill Perkins, conceived of the exhibition as a celebration both of the company’s work and of Australian artists, inspired by her work with the company’s Mind’s Eye arm, which takes the works of Shakespeare as inspirational starting points for artist responses.
